Tuesday

Tuesday, September 30th, 2008

We went in to spend the day with Andrew and found he was just about back to his goofy self. We sat around and talked and watched movies. He’s really gotten past most of his fears and is “excited” to have the surgery, just to get it over with.

Goofy Andrew

We had to limit his time on the Gamecube, otherwise he would have played it all day. When we finally got him to stop he chatted quite a bit, and was really quite funny and chipper. He didn’t really like all the attention from the staff, he prefers to do things himself.

The hospital came around and put up Halloween decorations, which interested Andrew for about 30 seconds.

Andrew anxiously awaited a delivery from his favorite Mexican restaurant, but it took a little too long to show up so we had to order lunch from the cafeteria. He was able to have the mexican for dinner, and couldn’t have been happier.

The surgery is on for tomorrow around 11. I’ll be posting hourly updates on Twitter, and a recap here in the next day or two.

Day 3

Monday, September 29th, 2008

I went to the hospital at 6 this morning to spend some time just me and Andrew. We had breakfast, watched movies and hung out. Rachel came in around 9 and we chatted and tried to act out an episode of Dora the Explorer. Andrew was not impressed.

Breakfast

By morning the brain goo bag was mighty full.

Brain Drain Day Two

I’m not sure why it took so long but they brought in a Gamecube for him to play. This was a HUGE boost for him. He doesn’t want to talk much, but he seems fairly nervous.

The rest of the day mostly consisted of waiting around to hear from the doctor, which didn’t happen until late in the evening. So here’s the latest:

The surgery is scheduled for Wednesday, starting at 11am and ending between 6pm and midnight. There are several possible complications, but the doctor is still optimistic. We’ll be getting hourly updates on the progress and the doctor will follow up after words, first with Brittany and I alone, then with the whole family.

As always twitter.

I took a photo of the tube in Andrew’s head, I didn’t want to post it but you can see it here. (fixed link)

Andrew day 2

Sunday, September 28th, 2008

Rachel and I made it to Boise late Saturday night, by early Sunday morning we were visiting Andrew in the Pediatric ICU unit at St. Luke’s. The ICU is fairly serious business, you have to get buzzed in and wash your hands on the way in and the way out.

Andrew

Get Well

Andrew was in fairly high spirits on Sunday morning, he was really happy that we were there and I think he was enjoying being pampered. The cards and gifts we brought helped boost his spirits. By the afternoon he was notably more down and starting to get scared. Getting woken up every hour wasn’t helping either.

MRI

In the early afternoon we met with Andrew’s doctor. We started off with the MRI. The large white spot at the top was the build up of liquid that was prevented from draining by the tumor. That was taken car of by Saturday’s surgery. Below the large area is a grey area with white spots, that’s all tumor. There are 3 likely possibilities for the type of tumor, one is benign, the other two, unfortunately, are not. They won’t be able to tell until after they remove the tumor, sometime Tuesday or Wednesday. There’s a lot to say about what could happen after the surgery that I’ll leave for another time, but he’ll have to be in the hospital for a minimum of a week after the operation.

Brain Drain

The drain tube is still in Andrew’s head, this is what’s coming out. Surprisingly un-gross.

Still updating twitter as often as possible.
