Andrew and Dad

So far the best one page write up I’ve found on Medulloblastoma is here. It really matches what the doctors have been saying. However, the list of side effects from the chemo and radiation is a bit longer than than listed here. Its also important to note that we won’t be 100% sure if its medulloblastoma until the lab results come back sometime next week.

Andrew has been doing better today, he’s more awake and his motor skills are improving, though he’s still wobbly on his feet.

Without being there its hard to give full and accurate updates, but I’ll do the best I can.

Wednesday & Thursday

Thursday, October 2nd, 2008

The Twitter updates from Thursday should explain just about everything, but basically Andrew was in Surgery for over 10 hours. The surgery went REALLY well, they believe they got the whole tumor, and in post op they found Andrew still had all of his basic motor skills, vision and hearing in tact. The bad news is the tumor was malignant, it was a medulloblastoma. It’s a very scary position for our whole family, but Andrew has been super strong and brave up to now, and were confident that he’ll have the strength to fight and beat the cancer.

We all really appreciate the thoughts, prayers and support that have come from everyone all over the world.

Here are a couple photos of Andrew before the surgery.

Before

On the road

Directly after the surgery I went up to his room to see him. He was awake, but very doped up. Everyone agreed that he’s very funny and a little cranky after anesthesia. I didn’t stay long, since he needed his sleep. I did get a gnarly photo of the top of his head here.

The next day he was pretty doped up all day, but lucid enough for conversation. Eventually they disconnected most of the tubes, which he loved. He slept plenty but wasn’t eating much. His eye’s aren’t really working together, giving him double vision, so they’re keeping one eye covered at all times. They think the eyes will sync back up in a few days.

Day After

Before the surgery this lady had him make a list of all the things he likes, then we got out of surgery his answers had been turned into a poster, I imagine just in case he forgot he had a 10 year old sister and is in 3rd grade.

Poster

There’s another semi-graphic photo of the back of his head here.

Things are going to move a lot slower from here on out, so I’m trying to think of the best way to keep everyone informed without having you check here and Twitter every day. Keep checking here in the short term, we’ll come up with something.

Thank you again.
