Hey, Andrew . . . I saw your mom and Taylor at church today and your mom gave me your card. I’ve been thinking about you a lot. Sorry I didn’t call or come over. It sounds like a lot has happened since I saw you in the hospital. I like the new haircut . . . much better than your weird mohawk. I’ll try to be better at checking in on you guys, and hopefully you’ll be well enough to make it back to church soon. Take care,

    Hi Andrew,

I am glad you are doing well. Hang in there, buddy! Thanks for your good attitude, I sent your Mom a cartoon with an idea for some head art…I don’t know if she told you about it. It is a bald person getting a bowling ball tattooed on their head. Just an idea for a laugh! Hope you are feeling better after the chemo. God bless you! You and your family are in my prayers. See you soon. Nadine

    Fran Cantwell-Warren Says:

    Hi, Andrew,
It was fun chatting with you at the eye doctor’s office today. You are an amazing person! So brave and so cheerful. Your mom and sister are also very brave. Your mom is very busy, I know, but remind her to sign you and Taylor up for family camp at Camp Rainbow Gold. You will have a wonderful time!

The advice I can give you as a fellow cancer survivor is to recognize the love and blessings you have. I predict that some day you and your family will be back to your normal life like it was B.C. (before cancer). The only difference will be that you will be stronger and wiser!

Good luck with your studies, but don’t worry too much. Work on getting well, and your education will become easier.

P.S. Thank you for your opinion on the sunglasses I was trying on–I bought them.

    Your new friend,
    Fran

    Tony Burt Says:

Hi Andrew, I have the pleasure of working with your mother! She was telling me the other day about the immanent balding episode and I can’t wait to see the results. Your mother is very proud of you; if you didn’t already know that.

She tells me that you are an “extreme” optimist and that you have been a true hero throughout this whole experience. A “hero” you say? Dictionary.com defines a hero as, “a man of distinguished courage or ability, admired for his brave deeds and noble qualities.” While you may not be a man in physical stature, you definately are handling this chapter of your life as good as any “man” would hope to, and with many heroic qualities to boot.

There is one thing that is hard for “heroes” though, and that is allowing others to nurture them when they have been wounded in battle. So remember, God has given you many people to help nurture you back to health (especially your mom, sister, and grandparents) and letting them care for you (and yes even fuss over you) provides them a blessing and ultimately lets you put more effort in to healing. Lean into God, he doesn’t cause hard things to happen to us, but allows them to happen so that we can grow from the experience. He also tells us in the Bible that he will not give us more than we can handle.

Keep up the good work and progress, Hero Vanderploeg, you are an inspiration to this man!

    Hey Andrew,
I saw something your mom posted on a gaming site, so I figured I’d come by and say hello. I’m sure you’re tired of people saying they’re sorry for you, so I’m not going to do that. :P I remember being your age, and all I did was play video games. Heck, I’m 18 now, and all I do is play video games. Unfortunately, I’m starting college soon, so I have more important things to focus on. Enjoy gaming while you’re a kid dude, because you’re not going to have much time for them once you’re an adult! I sure wish I could be a kid again. Anyway, keep your chin up. Hi Andrew or is it Andy :)
I read about you in a post your Father made on the Kotaku website, so I thought I would pop over and say hello!
How’s your day gone today, fella?
Hope your making progress and keeping good, positive thoughts going.

I live all the way over here in England, a place called St Albans, its a fascinating little city with a lot of history behind it, to be exact, though Monday to Friday I work in a place called Birmingham. Its supposed to be British summertime over here, holiday season, but as I look out the window all I can see is rain..typical rainy English weather!

I work as an artist for a computer games firm called “CodeMasters”, maybe you have heard of us? We make lots of cool racing games, and a few other sports and action games. Lots of fun….and beats working for a living ;)

Keep strong Andrew, all the best for the future.

    Jamie

I’m a 30 year old man and can say without a shadow of doubt that you are stronger than I am. Know that God loves you and my family will keep you in our prayers.

    Dom. Says:

    Yo Andrew,
I read about you from your dad back at a site I frequent and I have to say you’re one tough little guy. I can’t imagine the things you’re going through, but I just want to wish you luck and try to give you the spirit to rock on.
Hope you get better little man :D

    Mark Murphy Says:

    Andrew,

Hello from Charleston, SC! We don’t know each other, but I wanted to write and wish you all the best! Your mother seems to love you very much, and I’m sure she is not the only one. Take care buddy!

    Eric (fellow gamer) Says:

    Hi Andrew,

I am an avid reader of Kotaku and just wanted to let you know I saw your dad’s comment about you. He cares about you very much and from the comments on your website I can tell many other people do as well. It’s good to see you like games so much, I have been playing since I was 4 years old and it got me though many tough times. I hope to see you better soon!

  148. 148
    Mike Says:

    Andrew,

I had leukemia when I was about the same age as you. Bone cancer, essentially. I saw your dad post on a website (Kotaku), and I thought I’d say hey. I think the only thing that got me through chemo was my old Nintendo (8 bit, with the rectangle controllers). It may seem scary, but take it from a survivor that you’re a very brave boy. I wish I’d had the internet back then. Your family seems to have really gone all out for you with this site! I especially love that Daily Prophet paper. Brilliant!

Just be sure to get really good at whatever games they have laying around so you can destroy all the friends you’ll have when you get better. Show them you were busy. :)

  149. 149
    Ryan Says:

    Hi Andrew,

A big hello from Singapore! I came across your site in one of the Kotaku comments sections. After reading through your stories I just want to say you’re one tough kid! Hang in there, and I wish you the best of luck. Stay positive and don’t let anything get you down.

    Steven Schwartz Says:

    Hello there Andrew,

You don’t know me but I have been reading about your story. It’s kids like you that keep me going too. I also have an illness and even take some chemotherapy drugs to help treat my Crohn’s Disease. I know it’s gotta be hard to stay happy and sometimes you might wonder “Why me?”, but you are a great kid and you’ll get through this! :D Hope you are feeling better soon and you can get back to doing what you love.

    Sincerely, Steven

    Johnny Says:

I too have gotten here from Kotaku.

After I found about you, all the junk I went through today has been reconstructed into an ambition to help those that are striving for a bed of roses.

Thank you, you’re a great inspiration for those swaying off the course to their dreams.

    Stay gusty, eternal bliss awaits!

    Pablo Contreras Says:

Hey! I came here through a link your dad posted on a nerd niche website I frequent. Just want to say hi from way south – Chile, in South america. Hey Andrew!

I only recently began following your fight and I wanted to stop by and wish you well. You are strong and have more courage than many grown men – stay that way, and persevere through it all!

    Dont ever give up!

    Richard Says:

hey how’s it going andrew & to your your family as well, hello,

I just read about your story on kotaku & thought I’d leave a message as well as I too, had a family member in the same situation whom was very close to me; she is however in a better place. Thankfully though my sister though is a survivor of cancer & is doing well this day. I lost my mom at a young age & for to realize that back then was a harsh reality. being 5-6 years old at the time you would think, oh your mom is being taken care so there’s no need to worry however that changed . I still think about my life & how it would be different if she was around to this day but i know in my heart that she watches me everyday. I have no doubt in my mind that that hope exits in this world just as much as patience does. I’m sure you’ve heard of the saying, “patience is a virtue” well for one thing I’m sure Andrew has a lot of that just like myself if he’s come this far. You keep hanging in there buddy & soon you’ll be out there enjoying yourself just like all the other kids having fun, going to carnivals, parks, etc you just keep believing in yourself as mush as you a here in the video game world, remember you are in real life as well as you’re a fighter. take care & stay strong.

    From San Diego, CA

    Richard

    Phil Calderwood Says:

    Hi Andrew

I read about you at a videogames website I like to visit. Your dad mentioned that you like to hear from people in other countries, so hello to you from Glasgow in Scotland! Andrew is a very common name in my country – in fact, our national flag is called the St. Andrew’s Cross – so perhaps your family has a little Scottish blood somewhere in it?

You sound like a very strong and brave young man, and I have no doubt you’ll beat your problems in the end.

My very best wishes to you for everything you do in the future
    Phil

  157. 157
    Marlo Says:

Hey Andrew! Your dad posted about you on Kotaku.com, so I thought I’d drop by and leave a comment.

He said you like hearing from people from other countries. I’m only from Canada, and it’s quite similar up here, but I love hearing about other countries too. It’s great to have something in common with an astounding fellow such as yourself. Just recently I met my penpal from Sweden; we’ve been writing for three years, and I learned how to speak Swedish as a big surprise for her. :) She was impressed!

I understand how video games are an escape for you. Though my ordeals in life have not been remotely on the same level as yours, I know how it feels to need the escape a good game provides. My game of choice is usually Pokemon. :)

However, the feats you go through every day that are posted on this blog are far scarier and more brave than learning Swedish verb conjugation (which, if you ever wanted to know, is almost wickedly simple). I wish you all the best! You’re a real trooper, kid. :D

    ~Marlo

  158. 158
    Armando Says:

    Hey there, young man.

Your dad pointed me here, and I’ll be sure to bookmark this site, because you truly are such a brave and wonderful person. I’m down from Mexico, but I’m currently in Canada. It’s pretty fun to have two citizenships, because it means that someone, somewhere, will always have your back on things. I have a bunch of friends from other places that would love to comment here, so I’ll be pointing them this way. One of them is from St. Andrews in Scotland!

I know how it feels to battle a thing such as this. Back when I was your age, I had cancer in my nether regions. It’s never a fun place to get any health problem, especially not cancer. Reading through your fight only makes me proud and happy to see that someone was braver than I was. But in the end, I got through it, and I know you’ll get through it too. Never believe, not even for a second, that you are alone in this fight. We’re here for you.

Now, on a less depressing note, I always found video games to be awesome to keep your spirits up. That’s the main thing, to keep your spirits up. It really does make quite a difference on a base biological level! I always preferred games like Tetris and Pokemon. They keep you thinking and the skills you pick up really do come in handy later on in life.

I wish you the best, and I’ll stick around. You’re doing better than me when I was your age, so take comfort in that you’re braver and more courageous than pretty much everyone out there. Keep up the awesome work!

    ~Armando

I have an uncle just underwent his 3rd surgery to remove a brain tumor, and he is doing very well. He said he is going to start following your website. You’re never alone out there kid, we are cheering for you!

    Have a great day, Andrew.

    Hey Andrew.

I know I’m a little late to the party but I just found your dad’s post on Kotaku and wanted to say “Hi and best wishes.” from Montreal, Canada. I see you’re doing well and I hope you had an awesome Thanksgiving.

It’s alot of the same up here in Canada, but Montreal is a beautiful city and I hope you get to visit some day, it’s one of the oldest cities in the US and Canada and we have a meal that’s made of French Fries, Gravy and Cheese (Definitely the best part of living here.) Living here, I do know how to do something kinda neat:

J’espere que vous etes joyeux et forte.

Keep fighting the good fight and don’t let the man get you down. ;)

    Andrew,

I heard you are going in for tests since finishing your last round of chemo. I wanted to let you know that I am thinking about you and praying that all goes well. It sounds like you had a good Christmas. I think I am all shopped out and ready to get back to some kind of routine. Say hello to your family and Happy New Year to you and Taylor! Good luck to you today.

We are all so happy to hear the great news about your test results today. I know this has been a very good day for you and your family. Keep taking good care of yourself and keep up that positive attitude that impresses me so much. You need to post more pictures – I actually think you are quite handsome with or without hair, and I can’t say that about many people!!!! You are still in our prayers.

    ANDREW!!!!!

YES, no news certainly is good news!!! I am just checking in to see how you’re doing and it sounds like you are doing very well. All of us in Colorado are so glad to hear this. So, how did you like the philharmonic? Any good? It is foggy and snowy here today and I am getting very tired of the cold weather. I am ready for spring. We all think of you often and continue to say prayers for you. You take care, and I am looking forward to a new webcam from you.

We all love you – Your Cousin Beth

    Hi, Andrew,

I wasn’t able to attend St. Baldrick’s this year. I would have loved to hear you speak! I’m glad you’re past all the bad stuff. From now on I hope your life is just good stuff!

I would like to invite you and your family to attend this year’s Relay for Life. It’s a fundraiser for the American Cancer Society. I think you would enjoy it. There is a dinner for survivors and a whole lot of activities. For more information, contact the American Cancer Society office, or check out the event website http://www.adarelay.com.

Best wishes to you and your family!

    Hi Andrew!!!

Wow, that was very sad giving you a hug goodbye at school today…. Not that it is really goodbye, of course. And, in reality, it is a very happy time for you. You are finally getting to go back to school, and that’s what we all wanted for you. We have just been friends for so long now, that I will really miss seeing you so much. I willl still come visit though!! I’ll stop by at your recess time so that I can talk to you sometimes. You have such a nice teacher and classmates. You are in very good hands.
I’m also so excited about your upcoming trip to Florida. Can’t wait to hear all about that!!
    Email me, OK? juliemorgan111@hotmail.com

    See you soon.
    Love you,
    Julie
